There are already three people in artist Imogen Cameron's marriage - herself, her husband, Alex, and their son, Rufus - and that's just the way she likes it. But all that's about to change! When the Camerons hit dire financial straits they are forced to move out of London and accept an offer from Eleanor Latimer of a rent-free cottage on her estate. Ordinarily, the offer of a free home in the country is not to be sniffed at but as Eleanor just happens to be Alex's beautiful, rich and frankly flirtatious ex, Imogen is very sniffy indeed. And with good reason. Once installed in Shepherd's Cottage, Imogen's life is suddenly full to bursting with surly locals, psychotic chickens, mountains of manure, visits from the infuriatingly bossy vet, and of course Eleanor; who seems to be permanently at Alex's side. As far as Imogen's concerned, two's a marriage, three's a family and this - well, this is just silly, someone's going to have to go. The question is who?

A Far Country, Daniel Mason's long-awaited second novel, is set in an unnamed part of South America, where 14-year-old Isabel leaves her drought-stricken rural home for an urban slum. She arrives in 'the settlements', expecting to be reunited with her much-loved older brother, Isaias, only to find that he has disappeared. Isabel spends her days caring for her cousin's baby, dealing with the confusing pressures of adolescence. Though she is still a child, she must face the responsibilities of adulthood in an alien and frightening environment. Haunted by Isaias's absence, she becomes obsessed with finding him.

In this flat but intermittently intriguing follow-up to his bestselling debut, The Piano Tuner, Mason takes readers to two impoverished locales in an unnamed, possibly South American (and heavily Catholic) country: a rural area known as the backlands, and the Settlements, the poor outskirts of a large city. When drought and deprivation become overwhelming in the backlands, 14-year-old Isabel is sent by her family to live with relatives in the Settlement. Her older brother, Isaias, moved to the city several months earlier, and Isabel expects a happy reunion; however, he has gone missing. As Isabel tends to her cousin's baby and adjusts to the chaotic city life, the search for Isaias becomes her obsession, demanding all of her resources?including what may be psychic powers. The story's settings fail to evoke a distinct world; the backlands seem taken from the 1930s American Dust Bowl, while the city?with its nonspecific political corruption, simmering class tensions, and the popularity of saints, soccer and soap operas among its residents?is a grab bag of regional clichĂŠs. Mason's strength is in description, and though his accounts of severe weather reach a visceral peak, Isabel is primarily an observer. Readers may be wooed by the prose, but the story is a snoozer.

A GARDEN OF VIPERS initially centers on the investigation by Ryder and Nautilus of the brutal murder of a radio newswoman who, interestingly enough, has some ties to Dani Danbury, Ryder's significant other. Some additional incidents, including another horrendous murder, indicate the presence of a homicidal maniac in Mobile. Both Ryder and Nautilus are distracted by the revelations of personal betrayals --- Nautilus from the past, Ryder from the present --- that have a common source in Buck Kincannon, eldest son of a rich and powerful local family whose influence extends beyond the local environs.

Overwhelmed by what he felt was the worthlessness of his great success as a writer, Chekhov (1860-1904) decided to leave everything behind him and go to the far reaches of Siberia - to the terrible Russian penal colony on Sakhalin Island. This book mixes his witty, charming letters back to friends on his long journey with his grim account of the reality of life in one of the worst places on earth. "Great Journeys" allows readers to travel both around the planet and back through the centuries - but also back into ideas and worlds frightening, ruthless and cruel in different ways from our own. Few reading experiences can begin to match that of engaging with writers who saw astounding things: great civilisations, walls of ice, violent and implacable jungles, deserts and mountains, multitudes of birds and flowers new to science. Reading these books is to see the world afresh, to rediscover a time when many cultures were quite strange to each other, where legends and stories were ...

Pokolenia lat sześćdziesiątych i Hybryd. "Zbliżamy się do przełomu już nie wieku, ale tysiącleci. Stanęliśmy bezradni wobec chaosu, zagubionych wartości, odsłonięcia najprymitywniejszych instynktów, w spłyconym świecie bez miłości. Pyszni i obarczeni wielkim grzechem zaniechania wobec drugiego człowieka. Więc, może przez poezję pochylimy się nad źródłem. Może poprzez poezję naszym najważniejszym słowom nadamy wygłos pierwszy" (fragment wstępu).

February, AD 668, and Cashel is full of distinguished visitors. The reason? Under the old Irish custom, Fidelma of Cashel and Eadulf of Seaxmund's Ham, having been joined together for a year and a day, are to be married. But on the eve of the ceremony, the pious Abbot Ultan, who has travelled from the far north to attend, is found murdered in his chamber. Worst still - one of the most distinguished guests, the King of Connacht, has been seen fleeing from the scene and is charged with the murder. He demands his right to appoint Fidelma in his defence. Quickly Fidelma discovers that Abbot Ultan is not the pious man he was thought to be -- indeed, many of the guests have cause to hate him. It is a long weekend of suspicion, fear and more death before Fidelma and Eadulf are able to reveal to their restless and querulous guests the truth behind Ultan's murder.

There's a CondĂŠ Nast Traveler article fighting to get out of bestseller Buffett's first new novel in a decade, a groovily laid-back, ramblingly anecdotal, sun-soaked bit of Caribbean escapism that his Parrothead fans will relish like another chorus of "Margaritaville." Tully Mars, a 40-ish ex-cowboy turned guide at the Lost Boys Fishing Lodge island resort, undertakes various sojourns around the Caribbean, to Mayan ruins, a jungle safari camp, a spring break bacchanal in Belize. Nothing much happens?"That day, we spent the rest of the daylight hours on the shallow waters of Ascension Bay and the lagoon amid incredible natural beauty unlike anything I had ever seen before" is about as busy as it gets?except that Tully meets a parade of colorful natives and expatriates, including a Mayan medicine man, a British commando and a 103-year-old woman who skippers a sailing schooner and wants to restore a historic lighthouse on Cayo Loco, the titular island. The cha...

This book is a thoroughly revised and enlarged version of An Outline History of English Literature, the second edition of which appeared in 2002. It provides a survey of English literature from Old English to the present day. The material covers major literary epochs, and each chapter is provided with a general introduction to the most important literary movements of the period followed by a more detailed examination of given authors and their works. At the end of each chapter the reader finds suggestions for further reading. This book offers a readable account of the history of English literature in English for Polish students. Tje emphasis has been placed on factural rather than analytical data, and therefore it is hoped that it can be of interest both to students of English and the general reader who needs a reference to particular literary periods and trends.

Christina's mother walked out on her when she was just six years old. Now in her early thirties Christina has reached a desperate crossroads as a mother herself and goes on the run with her youngest, in a bid to find her mother, Greta, and sanctuary from her husband and family. Her journey takes her across the Atlantic to America, and ultimately the west coast of Canada where she meets Luke, a Native Canadian on a mission of his own. At times challenged and inspired by her new alien environment, Christina returns to memories of her childhood, growing up on the river in Meath, Ireland, and her relationship with her enigmatic stepmother, Angeline, who was once her mother's best friend. Against the backdrop of the open, wild and dramatic landscape of the North West Pacific, which contrasts so strongly with the enclosed spaces of her homeland, Christina begins to acknowledge the shameful reason behind her own failed motherhood and discovers a dark secret her family has never reveal...
