Nicholas Marten, the ex-LAPD detective who played a major role in Folsom's The Exile (2004), pursues an international conspiracy in this frenetic page-turner long on action but short on plausibility. When an old love of Marten's, Caroline Parsons, dies of a mysterious infection shortly after her congressman husband and son perish in a plane accident, her dying words set Marten on the trail of a South African bioterrorist. The former cop soon finds himself allied with another man trying to foil a cabal bent on creating a new world order?the U.S. president himself, John Henry Harris. Harris flees his Secret Service protection after rejecting the plan of virtually his whole cabinet to assassinate the leaders of France and Germany and replace them with people willing to launch biological warfare on most of the Middle East. Unconvincing hairbreadth escapes and the failure to explore underlying political issues make for a routine thriller.

The Lost Van Gogh is a first novel by a husband and wife team. It is primarily a thriller, but has more to offer than a fast moving plot with an outcome that affects more than a handful of people. The story that is the main thrust of the book is one occurring in the present day, but its roots are directly linked to people and events that happened during World War II. This concept is a refreshing change from the recently popular plot device of telling two stories simultaneously, one that is current and one that is happening at some time in the past. Unfortunately, the sequence of events happening in the present sometimes changes from three months ago to present day to a year or two ago without a clear transition. The reader has to be paying close attention to keep the chronological order straight.

As an AmeriCuban who remembers her visits to Cuba as a small child, I was very touched to see on screen the Cuba that I knew was not just in my dreams. What an excellent job in picking places that can make you really think it was filmed in Havana! You can feel as if you are really there! There are those who wonder how Andy Garcia could have portrayed Cuba so realistically when he left the island as a 5 year old child. But it is at those very young tender years that impressions are made that stay throughout ones lives. My early trips to Cuba have remained very vivid in my mind. I understand him so well. You can feel that he put his all in this movie. Countless Cubans can relate to the story that is told. What a heart-wrenching moment when he leaves Cuba and his only keepsake is taken away from him! How many Cubans must have passed through this same scene? The music warmed my soul. I would listen to it over and over.

Life was never black and white in Italy . . . Something about the place both disturbed and interested him. Venice reminded him of a bad yet familiar relative, dangerous to know, difficult to let go. As their exile in Venice draws to a close, Roman detectives Nic Costa and Gianni Peroni are ordered to investigate an apparently open-and-shut case, a fire in a glass foundry that has claimed two lives, so all they want is to wrap it up quickly. However, as they dig more deeply into the insular glass-making community on Murano and the strange Arcangeli family, things don?t quite add up. With increasing pressure from above to finish quickly, events spiral quickly out of control ? with devastating consequences . . .

British master James's 13th Adam Dalgliesh mystery, like its two predecessors, The Murder Room (2003) and Death in Holy Orders (2001), focuses at first on a hostile character who threatens to shatter a longstanding way of life. Acclaimed novelist Nathan Oliver incurs the wrath of his fellow residents on Combe Island, a private property off the Cornish coast used as an exclusive retreat by movers and shakers in many fields. When Oliver is murdered, Scotland Yard dispatches Dalgliesh and two of his team to Combe, where the commander checks alibis and motives in his trademark understated manner. Because the detective's new romantic attachment is more of a backstory than in The Murder Room, it intrudes less on the murder inquiry. The solution, which hinges on the existence of an unknown child, is less than fully satisfactory and also borrows elements from some of James's recent plots. Devotees more interested in her hero's personal growth than his deductive technique will find much to enjo...

The Law of Dreams tells the story of a year in the life of Fergus O'Brien during the Great Potato Famine in Ireland during the 1840s. It takes us from his home on a mountaintop, which he leaves after witnessing his family all burning to death - deaths which were in fact murders that committed by his landlords. From there he travels to Liverpool, then Wales and onto a harrowing boat journey across the Atlantic to America. Along the way Fergus meets all manner of people who, like himself, are all struggling to survive. He encounters violence, treachery, thieves and prostitution - at one point being groomed as a `pearl' boy. On his travels he falls in love 3 times, each time ending up with a broken heart. Fergus has very few moments of joy and often wishes it were possible to live inside his head with his dreams. Peter Behrens transports the reader back in time, to a world that was full of hardship, sorrow and tremendous losses. It teaches us how resilient the human spirit can be in order to overcome the horrors we sometimes have to face. Behrens has written a fantastic piece of historical fiction and Fergus's story will stay in my mind forever.

Lesley Downer clearly has an expert and intimate knowledge of Japan and her vivid, evocative novel is likely to appeal equally to those who know something of the country and those who have never been. Sachi's story is entirely believable yet all the more astonishing for being based on fact. The Last Concubine is a compulsive read that pulls you powerfully back in time, a great saga, like a Gone with the Wind set in Japan, with a heroine to rival Scarlet - and told with exquisite delicacy and almost cinematic verve - you can almost see the scenes unfold as you read. Downer uses her cultural knowledge and her insights into the Japanese soul to weave a powerful and subtle story that transcends conventional historical romance.
