Starred Review. At the beginning of Oates's 36th novel, Rebecca Schwart is mistaken by a seemingly harmless man for another woman, Hazel Jones, on a footpath in 1959 Chatauqua Falls, N.Y. Five hundred pages later, Rebecca will find out that the man who accosted her is a serial killer, and Oates will have exercised, in a manner very difficult to forget, two of her recurring themes: the provisionality of identity and the awful suddenness of male violence. There's plenty of backstory, told in retrospect. Rebecca's parents escape from the Nazis with their two sons in 1936; Rebecca is born in the boat crossing over. When Rebecca is 13, her father, Jacob, a sexton in Milburn, N.Y., kills her mother, Anna, and nearly kills Rebecca, before blowing his own head off. At the time of the footpath crossing, Rebecca is just weeks away from being beaten, almost to death, by her husband, Niles Tignor (a shady traveling beer salesman). She and son Niley flee; she takes the name of the woman for whom she has been recently mistaken and becomes Hazel Jones. Niley, a nine-year-old with a musical gift, becomes Zacharias, "a name from the bible," Rebecca tells people. Rebecca's Hazel navigates American norms as a waitress, salesperson and finally common-law wife of the heir of the Gallagher media fortune, a man in whom she never confides her past. Oates is our finest novelistic tracker, following the traces of some character's flight from or toward some ultimate violence with forensic precision. There are allusions here to the mythic scouts of James Fenimore Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales, who explored the same New York territory when it was primeval woods. Many of the passages are a lot like a blown-up photo of a bruise?ugly without seeming to have a point. Yet the traumatic pattern of the hunter and the hunted, unfolded in Rebecca/Hazel's lifelong escape, never cripples Hazel: she is liberated, made crafty, deepened by her ultimately successful flight. Like Theodore Dreiser, Oates wears out objections with her characters, drawn in an explosive vernacular. Everything in this book depends on Oates' ability to bring a woman before the reader who is deeply veiled?whose real name is unknown even to herself?and she does it with epic panache.

Jay McInerney's new novel seems from the outside to be composed of the most disheartening elements: The Good Life is about a group of privileged New Yorkers who are led to reassess their lives?and become in many ways better people?in the wake of the 9/11 attacks. The plot premise seems so pat and topical that the reader is likely to take fright. But there is mercifully no need. It is a tribute to McInerney's many talents that he can wrest from his schematic structure a novel that is both tender and entertaining. As often in McInerney's world, we find ourselves among a wealthy and ambitious elite, whom the novelist seems both intensely drawn to and repelled by. The focus is on two New York couples: Russell (publishing) and Corinne (screen writing), Luke (ex-banker) and Sasha (charity). McInerney brings an amusingly bitchy eye to bear on their lifestyles (for example, a character's double-height living room is described as appearing "to be holding its breath, as if aw...

Whenever I read a McCall Smith No.1 Ladies? Detective Agency title I can always smell the smells and visualize the situations he?s describing so clearly, for his writing is so acute and precise and his love for the country and its people shine through. Apart from having a cracking title for the book this latest feast is every bit as good as his earlier ones in the series. It?s a real-feel good novel with edge.

Set in Boston at the end of the First World War, New York Times bestselling author Dennis Lehane's long-awaited eighth novel unflinchingly captures the political and social unrest of a nation caught at the crossroads between past and future. Filled with a cast of unforgettable characters more richly drawn than any Lehane has ever created, The Given Day tells the story of two families?one black, one white?swept up in a maelstrom of revolutionaries and anarchists, immigrants and ward bosses, Brahmins and ordinary citizens, all engaged in a battle for survival and power. Beat cop Danny Coughlin, the son of one of the city's most beloved and powerful police captains, joins a burgeoning union movement and the hunt for violent radicals. Luther Laurence, on the run after a deadly confrontation with a crime boss in Tulsa, works for the Coughlin family and tries desperately to find his way home to his pregnant wife.

As a reader of fictional crimes topped off with a thriller edge I have to say that I was looking forward to this. Obviously the authors research was top notch, the characters crisp with a descriptiveness that photographs rather than paints the image into the readers imagination. Nothing prepares the reader for the journey that theyre going to experience within this tale and the darkness of mankinds vile nature more than shows its ugly face throughout the tale as the author shows that money really does talk in the modern world. Cracking thriller and one that I've passed onto the harshest critic I know, my grandfather, who not only is a voracious reader but one that I can virtually guarantee will enjoy this epic.

She lists like Hornby. She talks dirty like Amis. She has the misanthropy of Larkin and examines the finer points of sexual technique as she is adjusting the torque on a beloved but temperamental old E-type...It's hard to believe that this clever and candid new voice has no more to say. Whoever the author is, she should give up the day job. Only then will we find out what the real Belle de Jour is made of.' Independent This follow-up to the hugely successful 'Intimate Adventures' will be just as bold, funny and brilliant. Peppered with agony-aunt letters and advice, and stories from her 'working' life, it's also the story of a young woman making her way in the world - told in Belle's inimitable voice.

Those who consume their mysteries with earnest seriousness are ill-advised to tackle The Fourth Bear, which kicks off with the death of Goldilocks, a cucumber explosion and an investigation of bears doping up on porridge. It's hard to derive the standard reading pleasures when a crime novel's prime suspect is the Gingerbread Man. Jasper Fforde's follow-up to The Big Over Easy continues to track the sleuthing of Jack Spratt (of "Spratt could eat no fat" and beanstalk notoriety), a nursery crimes investigator who, like all dependable literary detectives, is at odds with his colleagues and is thoroughly mucking up his personal life. Not only is Spratt chasing down the most malevolent psychopath his town has known, but he also has been taken off the case for botching a previous investigation. It's a conventional detective novel set-up ? which is good, because toying with convention supplies Fforde with his best material. This killer, after all, has a "licorice mouth curled into a cruel smile." Jack, assisted by Detective Sergeant Mary Mary, is a protagonist for our irony-laden times, always aware that he is within a novel. He dryly resolves to pursue the Gingerbread Man "against orders, catch him, cover ourselves with glory, and (make) the by-the-book officers look like idiots." Fforde's fans will gleefully follow the inevitable fulfillment of this prophecy, a romp complete with madcap chases, flying chunks of diabolical gingerbread and, finally, an answer to the age-old question of how three bowls of porridge poured at the same time got to be different temperatures. Humor depends on an element of surprise. By playing so fast and loose with fairy tales, Fforde (who also writes the Thursday Next series) licenses himself to turn his sentences in unexpected directions, which results in a compendium of giddy delights.

This is a funny and frank look at bringing up kids for real parents everywhere. If you have an embarrassing child who bursts into friends' houses announcing 'It stinks in here' or shouts 'why is that man so fat?' on the bus (and not a spooky child who replaces felt-tip lids and enjoys dusting) then this book is for you. Self-confessed imperfect mum Fiona Gibson blends her own hilarious tales of raising three children with anecdotes and nuggets of advice from 300 fellow parents who admit they too get things wrong occasionally. Stories and tips cover a huge range of parenting dilemmas, from 'what to do if your child has a screaming, plank-rigid wobbler in M&;ampS, and everyone's giving you Bad Parent looks' and 'how to handle a foul-mouthed monster obsessed with the toilet parts of horses' to 'sex: should you make the effort or just not bother?'. Above all, this funny, refreshingly honest look at being a real-life mum will come as a welcome reminder that yours is not the only family who ...

Here are four unforgettable stories by the author of Life of Pi. Written earlier in Martel's career, these tales display that startling mix of dazzle and depth that have made Yann Martel an international phenomenon.
Inventive in form and timeless in content, each story is moving and thought-provoking. A Canadian university student visiting Washington, D.C., experiences the Vietnam War through an intense musical encounter. Variations of a warden's letter to the mother of a man he has just executed reveal how each life is contained in its end. A young man's fascination with the mirror-making machine he finds in his grandmother's attic is juxtaposed with the reminiscences it evokes from his grandmother. And, in the exquisite title story, a young man dying of AIDS joins his friend in fashioning a story of the Roccamatio family of Helsinki, set against the yearly march of the twentieth century.

There is another 1985, somewhere in the could-have-been, where the Crimean war still rages, dodos are regenerated in home-cloning kits and everyone is deeply disappointed by the ending of 'Jane Eyre'. In this world there are no jet-liners or computers, but there are policeman who can travel across time, a Welsh republic, a great interest in all things literary - and a woman called Thursday Next. In this utterly original and wonderfully funny first novel, Fforde has created a fiesty, loveable heroine and a plot of such richness and ingenuity that it will take your breath away.

After his disastrous Russian campaign of 1812, Napoleon returns to France to find a country under attack from the rest of Europe -- and from within. With the enemy massing on the shores of the Marne, the reduced forces of Mortier and Marmont turn back towards Paris, and Augereau retreats to Valence. Meanwhile, Bordeaux is occupied by Wellington's men, ably supported by Spanish and Portuguese troops, and the Russians, Prussians and Austrians are converging on the French capital. Elsewhere, Davout has hidden himself away in Hamburg, Prince Eugene's army is trudging across Italy, and Murat is negotiating with Austria to save his Neapolitan throne. Holland is in revolt, Sweden is a threat -- and French royalists are openly declaiming the Emperor's reign over. Indeed, they would seem to be right, for the Allies force Napoleon to admit defeat; ceding power, he is exiled to the Isle of Elba. However, amid all the spies, lies, rumour and uncertainty, nothing can be taken for grante...

Four women work at the Danish Centre for Genocide Information. When two of them start receiving death threats, they suspect that Mirko Zigic ? a Serbian torturer and war criminal ? is stalking them. As the tension among the women builds, they begin to turn on each other and discover that no one is exactly the person she seems to be. The office becomes a battlefield in which every move is subject to suspicion. An obsession with tracking down the killer turns into a witch hunt as the women resort to bullying and victimization. Yet these are people who daily analyze cases of appalling cruelty on a worldwide scale, and who are intimate with crimes against humanity and the psychology of evil. Already a bestseller across Europe, The Exception is a unique and intelligent thriller about the many guises of love and evil.

The invasion of Iraq by American, British and other coalition forces has indeed transformed the Middle East, but not as the Bush and Blair administrations had imagined. It is Iran, not Western-style democracy, that has emerged as the big winner, creating a Tehran-Baghdad axis that would have been unthinkable before the war. THE END OF IRAQ is the definitive account of the US and UK's catastrophic involvement in Iraq, as told by America's leading independent expert on the country. Peter Galbraith reveals in exquisite detail how US policies -- some going back to the Reagan administration -- have now produced a nearly independent Kurdistan in the north, an Islamic state in the south, and uncontrollable insurgency in the centre, and an incipient Sunni-Shiite civil war that has Baghdad as its central front. Iraq, Galbraith argues, cannot be reconstructed as a single state. Instead, a sensible strategy must accept that it has already broken up and focus instead on stopping an escalat...

A miscarriage of justice, in Mayer's unconvincing view, occurred in the Oklahoma town of Ada when two young men, Tommy Ward and Karl Fontenot, were accused of the 1984 rape and murder of Denice Haraway, a newly married 24-year-old grocery clerk, for which they were sentenced to death although no body was found. The men repudiated their confessions, which were extracted by allegedly coercive police officers, claiming that they were recounting dreams. In suspenseful style, journalist-novelist Mayer recreates in minute detail the investigation and trial along with character and actions of those concerned with the casevictim, the accused, families, witnesses, authorities and outraged townspeople.
